MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF THE DEDICATED MEMBERS OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF BLESSED GÉRARD HELD AT DR. P. THABETHE'S HOUSE ON WEDNESDAY, 6TH JANUARY, 1993 AT 9,30P.M. PRESENT: Fr. Gérard, Dr. P. Thabethe, Mrs. N. Thabethe, Mr. G. Kalkwarf, Mrs. C. Kalkwarf. The meeting began with Holy Mass. This was shared with Dr. & Mrs. Thabethe's daughters. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE PREVIOUS MINUTES FEEDING SCHEME FOR MALNOURISHED INFANTS Dr. Thabethe reported that he was unable to arrange delivery of milk powder as all the factories were closed for Christmas. The price was also not as low as he would have liked. We need to open an account with Nestlé. Fr. Gérard reported that the Church (St Anthony's Parish) already has an account with them and that he would order the milk. Dr. Thabethe suggested we order four boxes of 500g sachets, Nespray. Once the milk is at hand, the feeding scheme can begin immediately. ACTION: FR. Gérard. TRAINING IN DOMESTIC SCIENCE Mrs. Kalkwarf said there was very little to report. There were two possible teachers 1. Mrs. Joyce Buss 2. Mrs. Yvonne Renaud. It was decided to teach in English as much as possible, as the possibility of employment would be much greater if the candidates were able to understand their prospective employees. However, the communication between teachers and candidates was of paramount importance. Both suggested teachers can communicate in fanagalo. ACTION: MRS. KALKWARF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTER & SELF HELP SCHEME Mrs. Thabethe reported that she had not yet found any teachers, but was still investigating the possibilities. There was much discussion about the necessity to build a new building in Sundumbili. It was decided that it was too early at this stage to make any decisions. ACTION: MRS. THABETHE HOSPICE Mrs. Kalkwarf reported that she had contacted the Highway Hospice in Durban with the intention of getting some information on the general running of such an institution. The Matron was most helpful. But said that we should contact Mrs. Karen Hinton (the Hospice Association Chairlady) when she returns from leave in January. Mrs. Kalkwarf to set up an appointment. The information received so far - There are four different aspects to the hospice in Durban. a. HOME CARE - they care for approximately 200 patients in their homes; b. DAY CARE CENTER - the patients come to the hospice while there is no one at home to care for them. They are brought in on a daily basis; c. THE INPATIENT UNIT - They provide sixteen beds for patients to live in; d. BEREAVEMENT FOLLOW-UP - This is self-explanatory. Mr. Kalkwarf reported that he had contacted the Town Board who are in turn contacting the deeds office to establish who owns the land below the Church in Mandini. (Lot 115). It was also decided to ask the Hospice Association for By Laws pertaining to the building and running of an hospice. NEW MEMBERS It was unanimously adopted to give Fr. Gérard a free hand to accept and admit overseas members without having to contact the other members of the Executive Council. It was further decided to bring all future applications to the monthly meetings for consideration. It is with great pleasure that we welcome to the Brotherhood as Associate members the following: GENERAL 1. Father Gérard reported that the youth group in Mangete have no direction. He suggested that they may be allowed to join as junior members. In this way they could help with the brotherhood's projects. It was mentioned that the senior citizens in Mangete and Mandini have nothing to keep them occupied. It was suggested that this could maybe be a project for the junior members. 2. It was suggested that we draw up an information pamphlet for prospective members. ACTION: FR. Gérard 3. Medals are to be designed and discussed with manufacturers in Durban. Names & numbers of the latter to be given to Fr. Gérard. Capes are also to be designed for the Dedicated Members. It was proposed that we contact the tailor at Mariannhill for ideas and possibility of making the capes. ACTION: FR. Gérard 4. Fr. Gérard mentioned that we should have an official reception ceremony for the dedicated members and the local associated members. It was suggested that Bishop Mansuet be asked to perform this task. Fr. Gérard stated that his ultimate ambition would be to have a member of the Knights of Malta come to the RSA to give the Brotherhood their "blessing". The Bishop should be contacted to set a date. ACTION: FR. Gérard 5. It was suggested at our last meeting that a prayer be composed which should be prayed daily by all Dedicated Members in private and for use at official functions etc. This was adopted. The dedicated members should pass on their ideas to Mrs. Kalkwarf. This prayer should be ready for the official reception mentioned in No.4 URGENT ACTION: ALL MEMBERS 6. Dr. Thabethe suggested that the Constitution be translated into Zulu. There are some legal phrases that are difficult to translate. This was adopted by the Council. Dr. Thabethe will ask a lecturer from the University of Zululand to translate the statutes. ACTION: DR. THABETHE 7. Fr. Gérard stated that he had no reply from his letter of introduction to St. John's Ambulance in Durban. There being no further business, Fr. Gérard closed the meeting at 10.50p.m. with a prayer.
