MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF BLESSED GÉRARD HELD ON 25th JUNE 1996.
PRESENT: FR. GÉRARD, DR. P. THABETHE, MRS. N. THABETHE, MR. G. KALKWARF AND MRS. C. KALKWARF:
The meeting was opened with the Brotherhood prayer at 19:40
Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as true and correct with the following corrections: Item 3ii d. Should read Italy (not Germany)
Item 3ii g. Should read Ginrich (not Gilchrist)
Item 3iii Should read Mr. Khumalo (not Khuzwayo)
Proposed by Dr. Thabethe and seconded by Mr. Kalkwarf.
1. PRESIDENT'S REPORT:
a. NEW MEMBERS:
Mr. Michael Ayers Donor member pledged US$50 per annum (1st member via internet)
Mr. John Gundi Active member " R1 per month
Mrs. Phyllis Cunningham " " " R10 per month
b. MEMBERSHIP:
Fr. Gérard asked the meeting to canvas very earnestly for new Catholic members who
would also be active. He also asked that we canvas in the rural areas as well as the urban areas.
c. PUBLIC RELATIONS:
Fr. Gérard reported that we had sourced plain white T shirts for a reasonable price
and asked if we should have a number of these screen printed with our badge. It was
unanimously agreed to order 100x of these. The total price per shirt would be R25.00
inclusive of everything.
d. FOREIGN RELATIONS:
Fr. Gérard reported that the Ambassador of Netherlands would come to visit our Care Centre. He is a good personal friend of Dr. Smit, who is a friend of Fr. Gérard's.
e. GENERAL MANAGEMENT:
Mrs. Kalkwarf was asked to leave the meeting. Fr. Gérard reported that since Mrs. Getkate had left and Mrs. Beaumont was on maternity leave, he has been under extreme pressure to keep up with all the work. There is a large backlog of work at present. Mrs. Beaumont will return to work on 1st July, 1996 which will alleviate the situation but there are still many outstanding things which need to be done. Fr. Gérard stated that many years ago he ha d offered Mrs. Kalkwarf employment. Since then circumstances had changed and now Mrs. Kalkwarf had asked if the offer was still valid. Fr. Gérard pointed out the most of the work which is outstanding is for this organisation, he sug gested that the Brotherhood employ Mrs. Kalkwarf as a manager for the Care Centre. Mrs. Kalkwarf stated that she would be available to begin work on 1st July, 1996. After discussion it was decided to offer Mrs . Kalkwarf a salary of R3500 per month. Fr. Gérard
would still be the project co-ordinator for the Care Centre, but the bulk of the administration will be done by Mrs. Kalkwarf. We would still employ a nursing sister, who should be a catholic.
2. MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT:
a. AIDS AWARENESS PROGRAMME:
Dr. Thabethe reported that the two teams of educators had been busy giving lectures on Sundays after Holy Mass. One talk had been given at St. Patrick's and another at St. Emmanuel's. At the former there were approximately 20 people and the latter there were approximately 60 people. The ages ranged from 18 years and over. He said that both teams were feeling more and more confidant. Fr. Gérard queried whether there had been any thought given to speaking to the younger generation. Dr. Thabeth e said that they were aiming at the adults first and then would revisit each church again to speak to the youth.
3. DIRECTOR OF CHARITY'S REPORT:
a. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTRE.
Mrs. Thabethe stated that a letter had been posted to Miss Nzuza asking her to come to Mandeni as soon as it could be arranged. Miss Nzuza had telephoned to say that she would arrive on 28th June, 1996 and would come to Fr. Gérard's house.
Dr. Thabethe said he would organise the advertisement on Radio Zulu, for the course.
b. BLESSED GÉRARD'S CRÈCHE & PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL:
i. Dr. Thabethe reported that a date had been set with Mr. Khumalo for a meeting with the local community to discuss the attendance at our crèche.
ii. Mrs. Thabethe informed the meeting that during August and September there would be a polio and measles vaccination campaign and that the children would not attend school on this day. This would then be repeated four weeks later.
iii. BLESSED GÉRARD'S CARE CENTRE:
a. The building is at a stage at present where no major decisions have to be made. Mr. Kalkwarf said that we should begin making curtains etc. now. Fr. Gérard has spoken to Mr. Rouillon about the burglar guards and to renovate the beds which were sent by Mr. Meehan.
Mr. Kalkwarf said he would organise to get the beds from Henred Fruehauf to the Care Centre.
b. Fr. Gérard reported that the teacher from the Ambulance Corp. in Ireland will arrive on 28th June, 1996; that he would be away for the first week she will be here and that she should work with Mrs. Kalkwarf.
c. The tilt-up bath was delivered, but the fittings were unacceptable. The stainless steel was very poor quality. Therefore a stop-payment was put on the cheque.
d. Fr. Gérard reported that an Isuzu Diesel 4x4 was bought as an ambulance for the Care Centre. Delivery has been taken and the ambulance conversion has been ordered.
4. ADMINISTRATOR OF GOODS' REPORT:
Mr. Kalkwarf said that we should refer to the attached finance report. He stressed the need to do some local fund raising.
5. GENERAL:
Fr. Gérard asked the executive what they thought about the celebration of feasts. Should we celebrate on the actual day or the nearest Saturday? Mr. Kalkwarf suggested that we should hold the St. John's feast celebration on 21st June, 1997 and Blesse d Gérard's feast on 6th September, 1997. This was agreed to.
