MINUTES OF THE EXTRAORDINARY MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF BLESSED GÉRARD HELD ON 2ND MAY 2000 PRESENT: Fr. Gérard T Lagleder, Dr. P Z T Thabethe, Mrs. N Thabethe & Mrs. C A Kalkwarf Fr. Gérard opened the meeting with a prayer at 20:00 hrs 1. BLESSED GÉRARD’S CHILDREN’S HOME: Father Gérard explained to the Executive Council the problems which have arisen with regards to abandoned children and children who have become orphans as a result of the AIDS epidemic. We have a three-year-old child with us for a full year now and a baby who came in at two months old has been with us for two months. Last night the social workers in Sundumbili brought in two other children, approximately 2 and 3 years old, who were found wondering around the Sundumbili Plaza. In addition to this we have a set of twins who have T.B and are patients together with their mother, who has both AIDS and TB. Under the circumstances it seems necessary to officially begin a new project “Blessed Gérard’s Children’s Home”. Although in practice the Children’s Home has already begun, it is necessary to make a formal decision, hence the meeting tonight. The proposal is to employ two of our caregivers full time to look after the children exclusively, although the sick children would remain in the care of the Care Centre. The two private wards – No.s 6 & 7 would be allocated as the Children’s Home for the immediate future. With the agreement of the Executive Council, to this proposal, we can go ahead with the fund raising in order to build another floor over the existing wards to house this home. Therefore the healthy children would be totally separate and independent of the Care Centre. A unanimous decision was taken to go ahead with this project. 2. Crocodile Farm, Richard’s Bay St. Lucia Launch ride Sleep in Hluhluwe Wednesday 5th July 2000. Spend day in game reserve Dinner in Ulundi Sleep at Mandeni Thursday 6th July 2000. Tour of Durban Friday 7th July 2000. Tour of Projects - Crèche, Sewing School & Care Centre. Dedicated Member’s Dinner – Salt Rock – 19:00 hrs Saturday 8th July 2000. Visit Feeding Scheme Bishop’s Jubilee in Eshowe. Sunday 9th July 2000. Opening & blessing of new building 9:45hrs Investiture of new member of the SMOM end +- 16:00hrs Open end and relax Monday 10th July 2000.
