MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF BLESSED GÉRARD HELD ON 12th JULY 2001. PRESENT: Fr. Gérard T Lagleder, Dr. P Z T Thabethe, and Mrs. N Thabethe & Mrs. C A Kalkwarf Fr. Gérard opened the meeting with a prayer at 19:00 hrs. MINUTES were read and proposed as true and correct by Dr. Thabethe and seconded by Mrs. Thabethe REPORTS ON PROJECTS: BLESSED GÉRARD'S PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL & CRÈCHE: Mrs. Kalkwarf reported that there is a water shortage due the lack of rain in the area. It was suggested that we arrange for water to be taken out the Crèche for drinking purposes. BLESSED GÉRARD'S CARE CENTRE & HOSPICE: Foreign volunteers, Miss Kristina Jatsch and Dr. Elmar Haid will be leaving at the end of July. Mrs. Lida Wammes, the first volunteer to come from Holland and also the first one to come as a result of the internet volunteer organisation. Three new ladies from Germany will arrive and will be here for the months of August and September. They are Barbara Ruhland, Silke Sehling and Beatrice Neher. There will be another young lady from Germany, Jennifer Neumann will arrive in September until April 2002 and Mrs. Conlin from the USA will come for the month of November. She is a professional nurse. Prosieben TV from Germany came and filmed a seven-minute film about the Care Centre. It is in German and was screened all over Germany. We did not receive, as much response as we thought would come from it. 3. BLESSED GÉRARD'S FEEDING SCHEME FOR MALNOURISHED INFANTS: Mrs. Thabethe reported that she has 29 babies on her books at present. She had discharged 4 children as they are coping well. She stated that she is coming across more and more kwashiorkor. 4. FIRST AID AND EMERGENCY SERVICE The Tugela Raft Race was a huge success. Father Gérard expressed his sincere thanks to all involved. Especially to Dr. Roux Martinez. Two lives were saved one with hypothermia and one with a drug / alcohol intoxication. We treated 56 cases. There was a wonderful spirit amongst the volunteers who worked very hard but efficiently. 5. DISASTER RELIEF: The floods in Mozambique did not develop into a disaster this time. Miss Monika Wissing from ECOM / Auslanddienst (MHD), Africa desk, in Cologne came to visit the Brotherhood on her way to Mozambique. She stated that ECOM did not intend to set up a Disaster Relief Centre in Mandeni. CHILDREN’S HOME: i. Mrs. Kalkwarf mentioned that we have ten children in the home, which is running smoothly. We had an outbreak of chickenpox with one child being hospitalised as a result. ii. The plans for the new building are in an advanced stage and we have been given a model of it. Father Gérard explained that to build one floor on top of the enlarged ward section would cost R500 000 less than if we were to build two floors. One would be a void without fittings (bathroom fittings, electrical fittings etc.) The Executive Council was asked to make a final decision on whether or not to go for the full solution (three floors), which would cost more than Three Million Rand or to go for the smaller solution (two floors), which would cost in the region of 2,8 Million Rand. It was decided to plan for the three floors with the middle floor being the void. The final decision to build would only be taken once we have the money in the bank. 7. FINANCE REPORT: Please refer to the attached report. Father pointed out some facts on the report. 8. GENERAL: Father Gérard informed the meeting that Father Martin O.S.B. of St. Ottilien in Germany, who is a film producer will come to South Africa in mid October for four weeks to make a video about the work of the Brotherhood. The film will be in both English and German and will be aimed at funders.
